Introduction to Yip Man Hall (叶问纪念堂)

Yip Man Memorial Hall is located near Foshan Ancestral Temple and most definitely be part of your Foshan travels. Grandmaster Yip Man was the Wing Chun masters and created a new generation of martial arts. He began is study of Wing Chun in Foshan. In 1949, he settled in Hong Kong, after a lifetime commitment to promote Wing Chun. Yip's most famous student  was the future Kung Fu star Bruce Lee who went on to popularize Kung Fu in the west. The museum has a collection and exhibition of Yip Man's Wing Chun information.

Since Yip Man's death in 1972, thirty years have now passed. Despite the death of Yip his Wing Chun spirit lives on. Kung Fu now appeals to many generations of people. Wing Chun  is a form a self-defense martial art developed to combat. Over the past decades there has been rapid development, the development of Wing Chun from Foshan to every corner of the world, to become internationally renowned Chinese martial arts, also is the number of foreigners learning Chinese martial arts is already on the rise.

In 1949, Yip Man came to Hong Kong by the recommendation of his friend Lee Min. On his arrival he became friends with hotel association chairman Liang Shang, Liang also was a martial arts enthusiasts. On learning that Ip Man was a student of Wing Chun instructor Chen Huashun Li Min and Liang invited Yip to teach Wing Chun publicly at a Kowloon hotel. 

Yip Man met his most famous student Bruce Lee in 1956. Lee reportedly never missed a lesson with Yip and would always train to the best of his abilities. Sadly before he could learn all the Kung Fu movements of Wing Chun, Lee immigrated to Seattle and therefore ending is studies of Wing Chun with  Yip. However, after finding fame in the east and the west Lee still found the time to visit Yip whilst in Hong Kong. 

After breaking into the film industry Lee was eager to spread the popularity of Kung Fu in the west and wanted to further learn the Wing Chun wooden dummy techniques. He wanted to film Yip Man demonstrating all the Wing Chun wooden dummy techniques so he could take back to America. However Yip refused stating that Kung Fu is an art which should be taught and passed through each generation and under no circumstances should Kung Fu be marketed or commercialzed.
