Introduction to Chongqing Zoo (重庆动物园)

Located in the western suburb of the Chongqing city, Chongqing Zoo was established in 1955. The zoo covers more than 60 hectares of land and there are 230 kinds of more than 4,500 rare and precious wild animals be shown in this zoo throughout the year, among them 80 percent of the animals belong to world rare species and national protecting important animals.

In the zoo, an artificial lake is constricted, which connects islands, arched bridges and exquisite pavilions perfectly together. In the lake, schools of fishes swim freely. There is a tea house and restaurants, as well as children's playground, skating rink, open-air stage, reading room in the zoo. There are pens or corrals for animals and amusement facilities, and the two kinds of pandas in the Panda Room are the highlight of this scenic spot.

There is a Panda House covering an area of about 2 hectares in the zoo, which is undoubted the highlight for visitors. Visitors can see the precious and childlike giant panda as well as other rare animals such as golden monkeys and South China tigers.

The rare South China Tiger is thought to be the rarest kind of tiger. There may be less than 20 left in the wild. They used to live in forests in southern China. They are smaller than most tigers, and look lankier. There is also a Tibetan bear with a yellowish colored head that dances when people give it coke or goodies.

The best chance of seeing pandas is during feeding -- between 8:30 and 10:30AM. If the pandas aren't out, poke your head in the office behind the English introduction board and ask the zoo warden if he'll feed them. Sometimes that's all it takes.

If this is your only chance to see pandas, consider spending part of a morning at the giant panda and red panda enclosures. To get to the red pandas, go to the left of the English introduction board and down the stairs. The outdoor enclosure has a half-dozen extremely active small red pandas. The zoo has also brought in new animals including antelope, giraffe, and elephant in recent years.
