Introduction to Nanxun Water Town (南浔古镇)

Nanxun Ancient Town, also called Nanxun Water Town, is the lesser of the three water towns belonging to the prefecture-level city of Jiaxing. It is a ancient town in northern Zhejiang Province, is located in the east of Nanxun District, Huzhou City, adjacent to Jiangsu Province, is one of Six Biggest Ancient Towns in the regions south of the Yangtze River, as well as a national AAAA level scenic spots.

There are many monuments which are harmony with the natural scenery in Nanxun water town, full of historical and cultural aura. Famous scenic spots in Nanxun ancient town include a number of historical relics such as Liu Gardens (Xiaolian Zhuang or Xiaolian Manor, one of five top gardens in Nanxun), JiaYeTang Library (one of famous modern private library in China), BaiJianLou (BaiJian Building, the buildings have the unique style of the Ming and Qing Jiangnan ancient buildings), as well as the ShuangLin Town, which is regarded as the hometown of old bridge, becuase it is the most concentrated areas to keep the old well-preserved bridges in China. In addition, the Shan Lian Town is the holy land of silkworms.

Nanxun, as part of Jiaxing, sits in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta, nestled in between the Lake Tai Basin and the Hangjia Hu Plain. Nanxun was once a wealthy village and magnificence can be felt in every corner of the town, even on the bridges. This town embodies what was once China’s "Southern Aristocrat" culture and is certainly worth a visit.

Like other water towns in China, canals run past the back door of every row of houses in Nanxun. The canals of Nanxun are connected to a branch canal which in turn is connected to the Changxing-Shanghai Canal, part of the Grand Canal system and known locally as the Oriental Rhine. The Grand Canal, as earlier indicated, flows between Hangzhou and Beijing. It was of course the presence of the Grand Canal, with its seemingly unlimited trade opportunities, which resulted in the immense wealth that was amassed in the relatively small town of Nanxun.
