Introduction to Lou Kau Mansion (卢家大屋)

Lou Kau Mansion (Casa de Lou Kau) once belonged to the famous Lou Kau who was once known as the “King of Gambling” in Macau. The mansion is believed to have been built in 1889 and is a two-storey traditional courtyard house (Siheyuan) exhibiting Xiguan architecture. The mansion was enlisted as a UNESCO Heritage site in 2005. Taking a tour of the mansion it is evident that the architecture has incorporated western design elements. The stained glass Manzhou windows, suspended ceilings and iron railings are all considered western design elements.

Lou Kau was one of the richest merchants of his time and having been born into a poor family in Guangdong Province, he moved to Macau where he made his fortune in banking and later furthering his business in the gambling industry. Lou Kau Mansion represents the height of the Lou Family prosperity along with the Lou Lim Iok Garden (Jardim Lou Lim Iok).
