Shanhai Pass

Shanhai Pass is the eastern end of the main line of Ming Dynasty Great Wall. It is called “First Pass under Heaven”. In the history, Shanhai Pass served as a frontier of defense against tribes from Manchuria. in 1381, Ming general Xu Da constructed Shanhai Pass and named it Shanhai (mountain and see) due to its position between mountain and the sea.

Shanhai Pass is a square which is about 4 kilometers long in perimeter. The walls are 14 meters high and 7 meters thick. In the middle of the pass, there stands a tall bell tower. There is a gate on all four sides of Shanhai Pass: Zhendong (East), Ying'en (West), Wangyang (South), and Weiyuan (North).
