Introduction to Ohel Rachel Synagogue (拉結會堂)

Ohel Rachel Synagogue, located on No. 500 Shaanxi North Road, is the venue of former Shanghai Jewish Diaspora associations Laxi Er synagogue. It is also the earliest synagogue built in Shanghai, and the largest synagogue of the Far East region's.

Ohel Rachel Synagogue was embraced by creeper from the outside. It’s a Greek temple-style rectangular brick building built from 1917 to 1920. After Jews came to Shanghai, they built more than seven synagogues and three of them were left. These churches become the religion center of the Jews living in Shanghai back then.

As for the history of Ohel Rachel Synagogue, few people know it. In 1920, Jewish merchant Sassoon built this Ohel Rachel Synagogue to remember his wife, and later it became a church of religious activity center. Another Jewish businessman had set up a Jewish school here.
