Shanghai Museum was founded in 1952 at its original location at the old Shanghai Race Club on West Nanjing Road. In 1959 the museum was relocated to Zhonghui Building at 16 South Henan Road. By 1992 the Shanghai Municipal Government decided to relocate the museum to Peoples Square which is at the center of the city. Today, Shanghai Museum has a great collection of 140,000 relics that includes bronze items, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy.

In 1993 the construction of the new Shanghai Museum began the building took three years to complete and covers a total are of 39,200 square meters. Shanghai Museum was officially opened to the public on 12 October 1996. The highlight of the architecture of the museum is the combination of traditional culture and modern concepts which makes it one of the most unique museums in the world. Shanghai Museum has 10 permanent galleries and three temporary exhibition areas. 

Getting to Shanghai Museum

You can take subway line 1, 2 or 8  getting off at People's Square Station.

9:00AM–5:00PM (Daily) 
Admission: Free (Only 8000 visitors accepted per day).
