Introduction to Zhongshan Warship Museum (武汉中山舰博物馆)

The Zhongshan Warship Museum will officially open in the second half of 2009 in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province. The museum will exhibit the historical cruiser "Zhongshan" and more than 3,000 cultural relics. The warship was salvaged out of the Yangtze River on January 28, 1997. The museum located in the Zhongshan Warship Tourist District in Wuhan City, is the first museum park in Wuhan.

The museum is built according to the level of 4-star scenic spot. It has an affiliated tourist service center of 3,000 square meters. It will soon be put into construction. A series of exhibitions will accompany the official opening of the museum. Since the salvage of the warship in 1997, Wuhan City decided to appropriate 370 million yuan, or 54.1 million US Dollars to build what they hope will be an internationally renowned scenic spot making it an Wuhan tourist attraction.

The warship, originally named "Yongfeng," was renamed after the founding father of modern China, Sun Yat-sen. or Sun Zhongshan, in 1925. It sank on October 24, 1938, at Jinkou, in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River when it was bombed by six Japanese. In 1997, after 78 days of hard work, the warship was recovered from the bottom of the river. Construction began on the Zhongshan Warship Museum in Wuhan in 2006 as a place to house China's largest movable cultural relic.
