Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a history of 5,000 years and is now an internationally recognized and mainly consists of the following remedies: Herbal Medicine, Acupuncture, Massage, Cupping Therapy and Dietary Therapy. In comparison with western medicine, Chinese medicine is based upon the theory of maintaining a balance within the body.

To learn more about TCM you can visit the world’s largest TCM museum in Shanghai which was established in 1938. The Shanghai Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine covers an area of 4,000 square meters and is located in Zhangjiang Hi-tech park in the New Pudong District. There are a total of 5 exhibition halls with different themes and the museum as a whole exhibits more than 14,000 items that back thousands of years.

The Museum has gained much recognition and has an important role in spreading the understanding and knowledge of TCM. In 1958 the Specimen Room of Traditional Chinese Medicine and within is 3,000 items that demonstrate the functions and knowledge of Chinese herbal medicines. In 2004 the Exhibition Room of the University was opened and exhibits 700 items marking the development of TCM.

You can further your knowledge of the ancient TCM by taking part in interactive activities such as answering questions via LCD screens about herbs and animal medicines. There are also films and lectures which you can also participate.
