Suoga is a small town located 60 km away from Liuzhi, in the region of Liupanshui, the west northern zone of Guizhou. It is the lone home of the Longhorn Miao, a division of the Miao cultural group with a populace of only 6,000.
Reverence to nature:
Longhorn Miaos have endured the cold climate and unfertile soil in the 1,600 meter Daqing Peaks for spans, and still live a self-sufficient ethnic lifestyle far detached from the contemporary world. Foreign scholars have christened them as living fossils of primeval civilization. The Longhorn Miaos are so notable for their exclusive hairdos and headdresses. Females wear wooden cones, about which they tie their hair, obtaining it up with white woolly cord. This head dress represents the group's reverence for nature.
The individuals there live a secretive ethnic life that is well aloof. The most striking thing is that the females there garb two horn-liked combs which lie distinctly on both parts of the head. Every comb is around 60 centimeters lengthy assisting the hair which is around three kilos in heaviness, which forms strange headwear.
Customs and Practices:
In the communities, the single girls regularly wear flowers combined with the hair adornments to hint that they are unmarried to enable the boys to associate themselves with them. Many of the girls in the rural community generally wear bronze jewels as ornaments. The necklaces are knotted together in front with a hankie which is sewed with lovely designs displaying the girl’s talent of embroidery. The more jewels a girl wears, the wealthier her family is.
Now, men no longer wear the lengthy horns, other than throughout significant festivals, and shelter their heads with Black Handkerchiefs in its place. Women still put on their extended horns, but rarely cover their hair about them. The Long horn Miaos have a quantity of customary traditions that continue to this day. But currently it is worn to be warm and act as an adornment as well as shielding covering while the females are in the domestic way.
